Kaleidoskop is a program for young artists as a platform to show the current artistic practices in Yogyakarta. This project was initiated by the three art space; Kedai Kebun Forum, Ruang Mes 56, Ace House Collective. In this residency program, there were 14 people selected to join the residency and I was chosen as one of them. We have worked and collaborated with cross-disciplinary roles for three months by trying to created several simulation programs based on our daily reflections during the residency in Yogyakarta.
Simulation #2, Sasana Gaib
”Sasana Gaib”, kind of ‘Inscrutable Stage’. On this second simulation, we tried to discuss about what is real and unreal on the cyber space. We invite several people to come to Ruang Mes 56. We had some rules before start the discussion for the people inside the space. No one allowed to speak directly to each other because on this simulation we did discussion through Whatsapp chat.
Its happen for two hours. We did the chat inside the space and for the people who didn’t want to discuss but want to know about what they’re talking about, they can sit outside the space and see the history chat through projector.
There was several questions in this discussion: how important physical presence for you? How we connect with something unreal (related to cyber space), how we can bring something unreal become real?
Public Presentation: Far Away So Close
As a public presentation, the participants created a collective space by utilizing the empty space, it used to be a bus pool called Damri Public Company in Jalan Mangkuyudan – Yogyakarta.
Old abandoned buildings and bus surrounded by the increasingly rapid development of the hotels. Time felts like freeze in this empty building.
However, the building is never completely empty. The space surrounding by the communities who believe with the various myths and ghost stories.
Young people and kids came in and out in the afternoon to take pictures, making graffiti, or just hanging out with friends. The building used as a center of leisure activities for residents even if illegally. The artists of Kaleidoskop 2015 see this potential of artistic practice as a method to create ownership system of this space.
The residency lasts for two month, start from July until end of September 2015. The participants also made some simulation programs and public presentation at the end of the residency.
