Reperformed Stereotypes

Departing from Walter Spies in Bali as a starting point, the exhibition has showcased two artists: Eldwin Pradipta from Indonesia and Mamoru from Japan. They unravel stereotypical cultural images through historical research. Through their works, the exhibition aims to explore how cultural representations are shaped by external perspectives and how locals internalize and “reperform” such stereotypes.

This exhibition is part of the “Condition Report – Curatorial Development Programme” initiated by The Japan Foundation Asia Center. The program commenced with Curators’ Workshops held in five cities across Southeast Asia in 2015. It aims to provide opportunities for young curators from Southeast Asia and Japan to enhance their practices and build networks by collaborating on exhibitions that engage with the overarching theme of “What is Southeast Asia?”
